🧠 AI-Optimized Sitemaps

Turn any website crawl into a clear, strategic architecture in minutes

Written by Jeff

What are AI-Optimized Sitemaps?

AI-Optimized Sitemaps transforms your existing VisualSitemaps crawl into a fully analyzed, improved website structure.

Instead of manually reviewing hundreds (or thousands) of URLs across spreadsheets and screenshots, it gives you:

  • A clear, improved sitemap structure

  • A prioritized strategy report

  • A redirect map (CSV)

  • A PDF + editable Markdown report

  • Tagged recommendations like New, Moved, Consolidate, Delete, etc.

👉 In simple terms:
It tells you what to keep, what to move, what to merge, what to remove — and what you’re missing entirely.

Here's a 7-minute demo:

When should I use this?

Use AI-Optimized Sitemaps when you want to:

  1. Redesign or Replatform a website

Understand your current structure before rebuilding — and start with a better one.

  2. Improve SEO & Topical Authority

Generate topic clusters and restructure your site to improve rankings and crawl clarity.

  3. Improve Conversion flows

Fix broken user journeys and create clearer paths to:
    - demos
    - trials
    - contact / quotes

  4. Improve 🤖 AI discovery

Better structure = better understanding by LLMs and AI systems.

  5. Maintain GROWING websites

As your site scales, structure gets messy. This helps you continuously clean and evolve it.

⚠️ What this does NOT do (important)

This feature focuses on structure, not full content auditing.

✅ It does:

  • IA (Information Architecture) optimization

  • Navigation restructuring

  • URL restructuring + redirects

  • Topic clustering

  • Conversion path improvements

❌ It does NOT:

  • Analyze full page content (yet)

  • Rewrite copy

  • Audit blog/article quality

👉 Think of it as architecture-level intelligence, not content-level editing.

How to use it - Step-by-step:

  1. Run a crawl
    Generate your sitemap as usual

  2. Open your sitemap
Go into the map you want to optimize

  3. Click “Optimize Map”

  4. Wait for processing
(This can take a bit — go grab a coffee ☕)

  5. When ready → click “View It”

  6. Click “AI Report” - to access the full analysis

What you get back:

1. Optimized sitemap

A new optimized structure showing:

  • reorganized hierarchy

  • new pages

  • moved pages

  • deprecated pages

👉 All original pages are preserved (nothing is lost — only annotated or relocated)

2. AI Optimization Report (PDF + Markdown)

A comprehensive, executive-ready report including:

  • Executive Summary - High-level explanation of what changed and why

  • Priority Scoreboard - What matters most (ranked by impact and urgency

  • Current State Analysis - What’s broken and why it’s holding you back

  • 🧠 Optimization Strategy - New structure + Topic clusters + User journey improvements

  • Implementation Roadmap - What to do first, second, third

  • KPIs & Success Metrics - How to measure impact

  • Technical Considerations - What to watch during implementation

3. Redirect CSV

A full list of recommended redirects:

  • Consolidation (merge pages)

  • Optimization (better URLs)

  • Legacy cleanup

👉 This is critical for preserving SEO equity.

🏷 Understanding the tags

These appear in your optimized map:

  • New → brand new page

  • Moved → page relocated in structure

  • Optimized → improved naming or slug

  • Consolidate → multiple pages merged

  • 301 Redirect → old URL → new URL

  • Delete → remove page completely

  • Archive → keep but deprioritize

  • VIP → high-priority page (nav / conversion)

  • Refactor → needs human decision

⚠️ Important: Refactor 🏷

This is where you need to think!

Examples:

  • overlapping services

  • unclear positioning

  • branding vs SEO tradeoffs

👉 The AI flags it — you decide what's best for you.

🧠 What the AI actually analyzes

The system combines:

  • your sitemap structure (JSON)

  • homepage visual hierarchy (screenshots)

  • business + industry context

It evaluates:

  • hierarchy depth & clarity

  • topic fragmentation

  • URL structure

  • navigation gaps

  • conversion flows

  • SEO opportunities

  • structural weaknesses

👉 This is not just reordering pages — it’s strategic IA optimization 🤓.

✅ Best practices

To get the best results:

  • Use a clean, complete crawl

  • Review results before implementing

  • Carefully validate redirects

  • Pay attention to Refactor tags

  • Treat this as a strategy layer, not auto-publish

⏱ If it times out

Very infrequently large or complex sites may timeout due to intermittent LLM capacity.

👉 Solution:

  1. Go back to your sitemap

  2. Click Optimize again

  3. if that fails, try a different model via BYOK.

🆚 Why this is better than manual audits

Manual audits:

  • spreadsheets

  • screenshots

  • disconnected notes

  • slow + subjective

AI-Optimized Sitemaps:

  • visual + structured

  • faster analysis

  • consistent logic

  • prioritized recommendations

👉 You move from guessing → deciding with clarity
